Rocking Chair Rock

When word got around the music community that the original Federal Duck was getting back together after 35 years, the reaction from serious rock fans was unanimous: "Why?"

I should explain that the Federal Duck was the band I belonged to when I was a student at Haverford College back in the '60s. We were originally called The Stomp Jackson Quintet, and then The Guides (don't ask), but we came up with our new and final name one night when we were lying on the bank of the Haverford campus duck pond, and some ducks started waddling toward us in what looked like a purposeful manner, and as we watched them with increasing alarm, the thought struck us that these ducks might be working for the government. And if you are wondering why that particular thought would have struck us, you did not experience the '60s.

We were one of many college bands formed in that era by young men with a sincere artistic desire to attract women of the opposite sex. We pretty much failed at that, but we did get hired a lot, because of a distinctive quality, which I would describe as "a low price." For as little as $100, or sometimes even littler, you could have the Federal Duck perform at your dance, dorm mixer, fraternity party, pagan tree-worship ceremony, livestock neutering, whatever.

We would play anywhere, and we would play all night long, or until the police arrived, which happened sometimes, especially at the frat parties, where there tended to be a lot of spirited hijinks during that magical 45-minute interlude between the time the first keg was tapped and the time the last frat brother passed out in a puddle of his own bodily fluids.

The Federal Duck could play through pretty much anything, because we had a bulletproof repertoire consisting of songs containing three or fewer chords, one of which was always "E." If something distracting happened during a song--say, a group of frat brothers suddenly appeared on the dance floor physically carrying a Volkswagen--and you lost your place, you could always play an "E" chord, and the odds were good that this was also what the rest of the band was playing.

We did that for four years, and, although I am not proud of this fact, the Federal Duck was the single most memorable part of my college experience. I was an English major, and I studied some of the greatest works of literature the human mind has ever produced, and today I can remember virtually nothing about any of them, but I still know all the words to "Louie Louie."

Anyway, this year was the 35th reunion of my Haverford class, and one of the events was a dance, and the Federal Duck was offered a chance to play a couple of songs. And so on a May weekend, four of the old Duckers gathered: Tom Pleatman (drums), Bob Stern (bass), Ken Stover (organ) and me ("E" chords).

It had been a long time, so for the first hour we just sat around, doing what guys do when they haven't seen each other for years and have experienced a lot of important life changes: We compared cell phones. It got pretty emotional, especially when we realized that some of us, without even realizing it, had text-messaging capability.

After that intimate gathering, we had a dinner with the other members of the class of '69. As we looked around at our classmates, we realized that, even though you could no longer call us "young bulls," you could definitely call us "old bulls." But being old doesn't mean you lack the ability to play good rock music. No, what makes you unable to play good rock music is a lack of talent, and the Federal Duck still has plenty of that. And so when our time came, we gimped up to the stage in Founders Hall, and--as we had so many times in the '60s--we launched into the opening chord of "Gloria," which is, of course, "E."

I'm not saying we all launched into it at the exact same time, but we all got there eventually, and for a few glorious minutes, Tom and Bob and Ken and I were 20 again, with our whole lives ahead of us, not to mention a certain amount of permanent hearing loss. It was a great night, an exciting night, a night that seemed as if it would never end.

We were in bed by about 11:30.

I've always been into art, ever since I was a kid in class (pictures of Indians were a very recurring theme) up until I started drawing in earnest and contributing to Family pubs, and then until now when I have no time or patience for it. :-) Don't worry though, maybe if I get really inspired on a free day I'll get back to my roots and try to draw something nice, then toss it up here and see what people think.
But no sir, the artistic talent doesn't stop with me in our family, as Dan (eldest) also boasts creative skills, as you can see in the following picture.
This is one of his most famous works ("Best Whale Ever" comes in a close second), which always impressed me with it's graphic yet thought-provoking depiction of God's righteous anger towards the wicked. Be warned, the following picture isn't for the faint-hearted!

The latest E-spresso really spoke to me. I've come to realize, like it says, that "One of these days, is NONE of these days," and "Every day we're alive is a special occasion." We should treat it as such. Sure, we want to have a long-term vision and a plan, but not at the expense of the moment. Thus, "as much as possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor, not endure."

Everyone seems to do a fair amount of enduring these days, I think we could afford to savor things a little more.

Jesus said this and I agree:

The only thing that matters is love. The only things you can take with you are the rewards of obedience and sacrifice. The only things that seem important are things done for Me, and things done for others to make them happy, to help them serve Me better.

It's not that I don't have anything to post, it's mainly that my favorite (and coincidentally, my only) laptop is out of order, pending a complete overhaul, lightning surge, or a miracle to get it working again. Apple is tempting me with their divinely sleek and cunningly adept machines, so it probably won't be too long before I have mine replaced. Sweet!

We finished the feast here this last week--I really enjoyed it.
Tony and I are training for a 10k, so I've been running a lot. I'm not sure if I'm motivated by the prestige and glory or the cash prize, but in any case, it's been really great exercise. I'm all about parallel wars right now.

Christmas is all around us, and so the feeling grows! I hope everyone has a great time tomorrow, on Christmas Day. Every time Christmas comes around, it reminds me why it's still my favorite time of year... Yes, even over summer wedding season. ;)

We went caroling this evening, spreading our joy to the whole world... Okay fine, so it was only to one sector of San Agustin--we'll get around to the rest of the world later. PTL the imminent rush to get out the last remaining Christmas CDs went well.

Then came the spiced wine, and presents--and when I say presents, I mean a LARGE quantity of them--the poor Christmas tree was pretty much swallowed up in all the boxes of every conceivable shape and kind with bows and wrapping paper shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow. I got a vest and chocolates :-)

It's 4:00 A.M. and I'm beginning to think Santa's not gonna show. That's it, I'm going to bed.. There will be pictures of our Christmas adventures put up soon :)

Hockey!

Yes indeed, ladies and gentlemen, at long last after nearly 5 years, I'm back on the court... well at least I was, for a couple hours today. At Contigo, I just find out they still have hockey equipment and play at a place near their house. Needless to say, I dropped everything I was doing and headed out today for some high-sticking, fast-skating and heavy-hitting hockey fun.

Actually, we didn't do any of those things, but we had a blast anyway, with me and Alf facing off against Leyland, Liz and Mauro. I can't remember who came out on top, probably cause I was too happy to be skating and shooting again to worry about what the score was :-).
A great time was had by all, and absolutely no injuries were had by anyone... Sweet!

All goofs aside, Richy's pretty much a hardcore hombre and definitley deserves lots of mention on his special day. Wish you a really hot year, with lots of just the right things happening... we'll have a B.O.L reunion this Christmas, until then... sayonara!

Oh we had a lovely time surfing on the beaches of Costa Rica. We stayed there in an AWESOME hotel for 2 days for about 15 dollars a night. SO SWEET!

Gosh I've totally forgotten about my blog!! I never update!!
Jamie boi is supposed to be putting junk on this blog also but I guess he's also forgotten!! Well I guess once I get some pics I'll start posting again.........its just so hard to keep up!!
For those who don't know I'm going to Costa Rica in AUGUST......YEY!! We just rented a little one bedroom house for just $150 a month.....can't wait to go. I'm on the road right now fundraising to get the money for our plane tickets......pray that all goes well!!!

Hey everyone. It's really been a while since I've done anything on this blog, something that I'm sure the 6 or 7 people who visit here already know! But it's mostly for good reasons, and I'll hopefully be posting more as time goes on, if the Lord thinks it's a good idea.

Skipping past Home Censure, reason #1 is... I had tonsillitis. Pretty badly too. The whole affair lasted more than a week... you would have thought I'd have had time to post stuff, just laying there in bed for that long. I guess not being able to swallow made me forget about it. :-)

Reason #2... Been doing a whole lot of this (see below)

That is, been doing lots and lots of work. Ignore the fact that I'm actually just pretending to work in these pics... it was for real this time. :) We had to build a loft (look it up, they're so hot right now) in time for our resident pregnant mother (Amanda) to give birth, and it left us about 3 days from start to finish to get that whole thing up. That meant working till considerably late hours of the night, such as 1:00, 3:00, and finally 5:00 A.M on the last day. It was intense, and I'm so glad I was able to take part. Gabriel and I discovered when you stay up working till 4:00 A.M you start to say really profound and unexpected words, ones you didn't even think were in your vocabulary, and lose feeling in the tips of your fingers.
Needless to say, we had a great time. Here's some one-word praises from this time:

Speaking of coffee... since Daylight Savings robbed me of an hour of sleep I've had a really hard time keeping my eyes open at devotions... usually I can manage staying awake for at least half. I hope everyone else sleeps better than I do.. :)

It had to happen, it was only a matter of time really.

I pretty much never thought me and Richard would be apart for like, more than a couple days.

But then he started talking about ridiculous things like "going", "moving", "relocating", and "head", and I knew something would happen soon. One thing led to another, and before you know it, he's out of Rescate's door faster than you can say renovate an orphanage.
Even though I've only known him for a year or so, that time's been packed with too many awesome and crazy fun memories to count. Let's see if I can think a few:

-Game nights with beer, sprite and enough laughter to give most normal people heart attacks.
-Movie watching-times... and see above, except add on more laughter if it was a black movie :)
-Doing lots of construction, yard work, and ballooning while discussing women
-Walmart trips on freedays
-Feria del Taco trips on freedays
-Valle Oriente trips on freedays
-Partying a really large amount, with our prize-winning dance moves in abundance
-Singing songs beautifully until Richy starts to harmonize and I follow or go off key...
-Exchanging Roman handshakes and high fives at every opportunity to the chargrin of our Home members
-Beating pretty much everyone who ever played against us in soccer, while discussing women.
-Our many travels throughout Monterrey, Mexia and ... other places
-Basically, us being insane and crazy hombres for Jesus at every opportunity

So as you can see, Richy's been an integral part to pretty much the whole time I've lived here and then some. And if the Brotherhood of Love were a pie chart, there'd be a big quarter piece missing out of it.

But as much as I think he's a complete sleeve on wizard for leaving, I know it's for the best and there's probably all sorts of really sweet and incredible things around the corner for him, which totally won't be a waste of your talent, Randy.
Anyways I love you lots man... it's been great living with you... hope to see you sometime soon...we'll watch a prison break episode and discuss women. si siempre quedas afuera de la galleta, todo seria bien... dame cinco huey!

Richy's pretty much the best guy around in general, I think everyone agrees with me there. especially when you need someone to take out the basura, or hiss at you really loud when you're not expecting it and freak you out. Back when there were only like 5 people in this home, at least one of them was Richy, so we still had fun anyway, even if it was just the two of us buying fine clothing at our neighbourhood Walmart, or eating bean soup at our neighbourhood taco stand.
And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, you find out he also drums like a maniac and sings country music like perfectly!

I know lots of older women out there who were waiting for this day... haha

We're pretty much approaching my favorite time of year... that's right.

November\December are always sweet months cause they're just fillled with cool stuff. Like my birthday. Oh and Christmas. As well as cold wintery weather and snow (basically in all places BESIDES Mexico--grr).

So everyone begin spreading the Christmas cheer and stuff! Don't forget to take some time out of your busy day to have a snowball fight with the kids, or make a snowman in your front yard. Or, if you live in a southern climate with temperatures so high they break world records, and don't have a yard, just try your best to imagine it, and the Christmas spirit will come!

The picture's not very relevant--it was the only one on my new drive that had snow in it...

You don't have to worry if you feel you're a mess. We all are! But Jesus is everything! Just talk about Jesus. Forget about your problems and their problems, and just talk about Jesus! Praise Jesus together and love Jesus together, and you can't go wrong! When folks see that you're just like them, when they see that you also stumble and fall, but that you're letting the Lord pick you up again, and you're giving all your trials and problems to Him and letting Him carry you through, this will encourage their faith!
The fact that you feel like a mess and you continue on--praising Him, loving Him and loving others--that's what matters! The fact that you have problems but you keep giving'm all to Jesus, and keep trusting Him to hold you and to see you through, that's what's important. That's what counts--utter dependence on the Lord!
Keep loving the Lord! Keep running to His Word! Keep depending on Him every minute throughout the day, for everything in your life, at every turn! Keep tuning in and listening to Him and following Him--that's what counts! This is what others need to see; then they'll be inspired to do the same. They'll know that if the Lord can do it for you, He'll do it for them.
For goodness sake, people don't need to see perfection. What folks need to see is someone who depends utterly and completely on the Lord. When you feel like a horrible mess and you still trust the Lord, that's what's important! We're all a horrible mess without the Lord!

Pretty much we had like a kazillion people over for freeday last week.......we, I mean I was thinking to going eat with a few of my buddies.......but then I guess the whole city came over and we all headed out to Sirloin Stockade!!!! But when we got there we found out it was WAAAAAY out of our price range, so off we headed to the Chilis which was right next door!! Neways to make a long story short......we ate and drank are fill......sang happy birthday for Sam(wasn't really his birthday) and overall had a great time!!
Then the time came for the bill!! I opened it up and AHHHHHHHHH there it was before me a 1280 peso bill!!! Pretty much in debt for like forever.....haha!!
